Messi could become first to win five European Golden Shoes

As well as the four trophies he still could win this season (three with Barcelona and one with Argentina), Lionel Messi can also win even more on an individual level.

Among them is the Pichichi for being the top goal scorer in La Liga, which could propel him to win the European Golden Shoe, depending on how many goals he ends up with.

That would be two more trophies for the Barcelona No.10. The Pichichi looks likely, with his 29 goals giving him a handsome lead, but he's only level with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah in the European race.

HISTORY

For Messi, despite prioritising collective success over individual glory, winning the Golden Shoe would see him become the first player to win in on five occasions: 2009-10 (68 points, 34 goals), 2011-12 (100 points, 50 goals), 2012-13 (92 points, 46 goals) and 2016-17 (74 points, 37 goals).

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo has also won the Golden Shoe four times. The Portugal striker is still not ruled out this season with 23 goals but will have to score a lot in his remaining seven games to overhaul Messi.

Ronaldo won the prize in 2007-08 (with Manchester United), 2010-11, 2013-14 (shared with Luis Suárez, then at Liverpool) and 2014-15 (the latter three with Madrid).

...AND THE BALLON D'OR

Winning everything that's still in play would give Messi another big prize: the Ballon d'Or and FIFA's The Best. Prizes that are usually given to players whose teams have done well in the Champions League and/or the World Cup.
