Most parents in Nigeria are seriously troubled, most especially when their daughters have attain puberty, some parents harbour parental control ideas about their children in general that are mostly detrimental to the psychological development of their teenage daughters.
These girls when they attain puberty, most parents have one super obsolete idea of control which is telling them to stay away from boys.Some resolve to monitor and cage the girls at home. Unfortunately these obsolete ideas often plung these girls into what the parents are avoiding, these girls can from a simple errrand be approached by the opposite sex, and from their due to lack of proper education by parents who feel their teenage daughters are too young or they find it uneasy to discuss such issues with them often expose them vulnerable to the opposite sex that are of low morals and poor integrity who will only take the advantage of these girls whom are mostly naive. Other reasons that cause such situations are careless parentage whereby when parents fail to provide the basic needs, people of low values and morals when they come across such girls, they offer them some money and easily buy the hearts of these girls. The dangers involved include; getting infected to life threatening diseases, unwanted pregnancy, dropping out from school, and so many more. From my own personal research it is very hard to find 20% out 100% of teenagers who are virgins in most Nigerian communities.
The following are tips to help mitigate this monstrous challenge; parents should be friendly and loving to their children although not to completely discard discipline, educate them about sex and if necessary recommend the use of condoms as a last result if they can't abstain when they are of certain age permit a healthy relationship, avoid being autocratic, democracy is more appealing in cases of this nature.
